Real Vision

My friend Michelle is blind, but you'd never know it. She makes such good use of her other senses, including her "sixth sense" of intuition, that she rarely gives the impression she's missed anything.

Michelle parents her children pretty much like the rest of us, except that she doesn't sweat the small stuff. Her daughter, Sarah, six, and her son, Aaron, nine, really benefit from Michelle's relaxed attitude.

Once, Michelle told me that it sometimes bothered her that her children probably weren't dressed according to her taste. You see, she relies on her husband and her friends to choose clothes for them. But since friends and Daddy don't presume to know what the kids like, Sarah and Aaron often get to pick out their own clothes. But Michelle avoids any battles. As long as the clothes are clean and weather-appropriate, she doesn't make it an issue. And she trusts that, at six and nine, her children can tell if they are too hot or too cold.

Another area where Michelle rarely argues with her kids is in keeping the house clean. It isn't that Michelle doesn't know when there's a mess. She knows it's time to clean when she steps on crumbs or toys that have been left out. But in Michelle's house, the kids have learned to put their things away because it wouldn't just annoy their mother to have a mess, it could be dangerous for her. Indeed, Michelle moves around her house so fast that often guests don't realize she's blind.

I realized this the first time my six-year-old, Kayla, went to play there. When Kayla came home, she was very excited about her day. She told me they had baked cookies, played games and done art projects. But she was especially excited about her finger-painting project.

"Mom, guess what?" said Kayla, all smiles. "I learned how to mix colors today! Blue and red make purple, and yellow and blue make green! Isn't that neat? And Michelle painted with us. She said she liked the way the paint feelssquishing through her fingers."

Something about my child's excitement caught my attention, and I realized that I had never finger-painted with Kayla. I didn't like the mess. As a result, my child had learned about color from a blind friend. The irony made me sit down and take a look at my child and at myself.

Then Kayla said, "Michelle told me my picture showed joy, pride and a sense of accomplishment. She really saw what I was doing!" Kayla said she had never felt how good finger paints felt until Michelle showed her how to paint without looking at her paper. That's when I realized Kayla didn't know that Michelle was blind. It had just never come up in conversation.

When I told her, she was quiet for a moment. At first, she didn't believe me. "But Mommy, Michelle understood exactly what was in my picture!" Kayla insisted. And I knew my child was right because Michelle had listened to Kayla describe her artwork. Michelle had also heard Kayla's pride in her work, her wonder at her discovery of the way colors blend, and her delight in the texture of the medium.

We were silent for a minute. Then Kayla said slowly, "You know, Mommy, Michelle really did 'see' my picture. She just used my eyes."

I've never heard anyone refer to Michelle as handicapped. She isn't. Hers is a special type of "vision" that all mothers could use.

Beautiful Mother's Day Poem

As The Twig Is Bent

The child stood sadly looking down,
Staring at something on the ground.
Her mother's words were harsh and sharp;
She felt them tearing her apart.

The silent tears rolled down her cheek,
But still she stood, mute and meek.
She knew somehow she was rejected,
Although physically, she was not neglected.

She wasn't yet in her teens,
Just a tomboy, in blue jeans.
She had learned to live with pain;
Throughout her days, it would remain.

Again her mind wondered, "Why?"
Perhaps she'd know, by and by.
There must be something awfully wrong,
She guessed she'd known it all along.

Maybe it was her own plain looks,
She'd read of it in some books.
How to a mother of unusual beauty,
Her plain child might be an unwanted duty.

But her mother was so fair,
If there was any trouble there,
The fault must surely be her own,
Oh, how she wished that she was grown.

Then she would go away and hide,
While her heart just ached and cried.
Finally the hurting words had ceased,
From their cruel blows she was released.

So she turned and walked away,
She knew better than to stay.
In her room she closed her door,
And cried 'til she could cry no more.

Then she prepared herself for bed,
Washed her face, with eyes so red.
She wished her Mom would hug her tight.
And, just once, kiss her goodnight.

At last she crawled into her bed;
Silently, her prayers were said.
"Please, Lord, just let Mom love me,
And, oh, so good I'll always be."

The years have passed, the scene has changed,
Mother and daughter still remain.
The mother now is growing old,
The child, once warm, has grown so cold.

Somehow, the roles are now reversed,
The mother's last, The daughter's first,
The beauty, too, has been exchanged.
It seems that nature rearranged.

The child, now grown, has beauty fair,
There is none other to compare,
While the mother has grown old and gray,
Her loveliness has passed away.

The mother looks up at her now grown child,
And tries to please her, with a smile.
But the daughter coldly turns away,
She's much too busy to stop today.

Let the old lady sit awhile,
She's not about to change her style.
She walks out, with no good-bye,
And the old mother starts to cry.

Oh, if she could only just erase,
The coldness from her daughter's face.
If she'd just come and hug her tight,
And kiss her withered face goodnight.

If those lost years she could recall,

A Good Lesson

The train has started moving. It is packed with people of all ages, mostly with the working men and women and young college guys and gals. Near the window, seated a old man with his 30 year old son. As the train moves by, the son is overwhelmed with joy as he was thrilled with the scenery outside...

"See dad, the scenery of green trees moving away is very beautiful"

This behavior from a thirty year old son made the other people feel strange about him. Every one started murmuring something or other about this son. This guy seems to be a krack... newly married Anup whispered to his wife.

Suddenly it started raining... Rain drops fell on the travelers through the opened window. The Thirty year old son, filled with joy, see dad, how beautiful the rain is ..."

Anup's wife got irritated with the rain drops spoiling her new suit.

Anup," cant you see its raining, you old man, if your son is not feeling well get him soon to a mental asylum. and don't disturb public henceforth".

The old man hesitated first and then in a low tone replied " we are on the way back from hospital, my son got discharged today morning , he was a blind by birth, last week only he got his vision by a very kind person who wished to donate his eyes after his death. These rain and nature are new to my son's eyes.. Please forgive us for the inconvenience caused..."

Moral :

The things we see may be right from our perspective until we know the truth. But when we know the truth our reaction to that will hurt even us. So try to understand the problem better before taking a harsh action.

Positive Thinking - I Believe

I believe- That true friendship continues to grow, even over the longest distance. Same goes for true love.

The Sculptor's Attitude

I woke up early today, excited over all I get to do before the clock strikes midnight.

I have responsibilities to fulfill today. I am important. My job is to choose what kind of day I am going to have.

Today I can complain because the weather is rainy or...I can be thankful that the grass is getting watered for free.

Today I can feel sad that I don't have more money or...I can be glad that my finances encourage me to plan my purchases wisely and guide me away from waste.

Today I can grumble about my health or...I can rejoice that I am alive.

Today I can lament over all that my parents didn't give me when I was growing up or...I can feel grateful that they allowed me to be born.

Today I can cry because roses have thorns or...I can celebrate that thorns have roses.

Today I can mourn my lack of friends or ...I can excitedly embark upon a quest to discover new relationships.

Today I can whine because I have to go to work or...I can shout for joy because I have a job to do.

Today I can complain because I have to go to school or...eagerly open my mind and fill it with rich new tidbits of knowledge.

Today I can murmur dejectedly because I have to do housework or...I can feel honored because the Lord has provided shelter for my mind, body and soul.

Today stretches ahead of me, waiting to be shaped.

And here I am, the sculptor who gets to do the shaping.

What today will be like is up to me.
